£60,000 Compensation Awarded for Hospital Negligence

A 57 year old woman from Northumberland suffered significant scarring after a botched operation at Royal Preston Hospital. 

She had previously undergone a mastectomy due to numerous cysts in her breasts and in their place had breast implants.  As her body rejected the implants the Specialist at Royal Preston Hospital indicated that he could reconstruct her breasts using muscles from her back.  He said he would achieve good results with minimal scarring and that she would be in hospital for 7 – 10 days.  However, she remained in hospital for 1 month, and was visited by District Nurses at home for a further 4 months. 

The operation left her breasts in the same state as before the operation but with horrific scarring to her back, which included flaps of skin.  The scars on her back were incredibly tight, and she struggled to brush her hair and dress herself due to the restricted movement caused by the tightness.  As a result of the poor operation results she also suffered from severe depression.
